|
Southern Maine Community College
is a publicly supported two-year community college offering
over thirty career-oriented programs and the Associate of Arts
in Liberal Studies, which is transferable to other colleges
and universities. As one of the seven colleges of The Maine
Community College System, SMCC is fully accredited by the New
England Association of Schools and Colleges with a primary mission
to prepare students for immediate employment or further higher
education. Approximately 1,600 students attend full or part-time,
with an additional 700 students attending non-credit courses.
|
|
SMCC offers a broad variety of college level arts, sciences,
and technical curricula. The emphasis in all cases is on the
application of knowledge. While education for immediate employment
is an essential goal in the technical programs, the greater
goal is to develop the potential for growth and change, achieved
either through advancement in one's chosen career path or by
pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree.
SMCC is dedicated to providing
a high quality program of instruction. The college recognizes
the importance of scholastic and technical knowledge and the
development of skills. The College provides an integrated technical
and liberal studies education to enable students to develop
self-awareness, social responsibility, and skills in order to
compete successfully in their chosen field.

| The Spurwink
Institute |
 |
Through specialized attention
to research, education/training, technical assistance, fundraising,
advocacy, grants and publications, The Spurwink Institute seeks
"to advocate for the development of a flexible continuum
of care to meet the needs of mentally ill, mentally retarded
and troubled children, youth, adults and their families."
Specifically, the Spurwink Institute provides assistance in
the design and development of innovative clinical and educational
programs, conducts education and training activities for professionals
in the various disciplines related to special needs individuals,
conducts research and distributes publications concerning topical
issues.
|
The Institute also assists in developing public policy for federal,
state and local governments, advocates for appropriate and cost
effective services, and provides technical assistance in a variety
of areas to support non-profit, for-profit and public sector
organizations. One unique aspect of TSI is that it is directly
linked to and supports the activities of The Spurwink School
(TSS). The Spurwink Institute supports direct service programs
which yearly serve over 3750 clients, employ over 950 staff,
and operate in more than 90 locations in three states.
This collaboration between
TSI and TSS brings together a diverse group of professionals
who understand not only the theoretical basis of services,
but are well-grounded in the daily, real world events and
pressures involved in the provision of such services. TSI
continues to expand upon the existing partnerships of the
Spurwink System. It develops new affiliations with institutions
of higher education, medicine, and research, all the while,
remaining grounded in the pragmatic world of services, treatment
and programmatic operations.
