Behavioral Health Sciences Institute (BHSI)

Internship Program

Portland Location

Spurwink/BHSI seeks Interns to provide services needed for Behavioral Health Sciences Institute (BHSI), a collaboration between Spurwink Services and the University of Maine at Augusta.

Spurwink is a not-for-profit agency [this includes the BHSI Division]. Spurwink provides a broad array of treatment, special educational, habilitative, case management and evaluative services through its residential and day, community-based and outpatient programs.

Our primary purpose is to provide the services needed to assist people experiencing emotional, behavioral and/or developmental difficulties to achieve their potential. Multi-faceted programs enable an individualized response to each client - program elements can be combined in many different ways to provide unique experiences for all clients. These services are designed to remediate or minimize the presenting conditions in order for individuals to fulfill their potential or maximize their functioning.

We work in cooperation with various state and local public sector systems in response to referrals and provide services to privately supported individuals. We have provided quality services in the State of Maine since 1960. We have been identified by The National Institute of Mental Health as one of the eleven exemplary programs in the country. Spurwink Services holds accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children.

BHSI internships would focus on research opportunities regarding efficacy of services for children and families. We also update training curriculum to reflect changes in treatment interventions and diagnostic information in the BHP (Behavioral Health Professional) training material.

Spurwink/BHSI is currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 academic year. Application Requirements:

  • You must be enrolled as a full-time student;
  • A resume and CV are required, and must be attached to your online application. Please include what programs you would be interested in working with; and
